I have been asked regularly how a prematurity blog and a mindset blog mix. “You should niche down”, “but then, who is your ideal reader?”, “what is your blog even about?”, “Who are you speaking to?”, etc… See, for those of you not in the blogging world, having a niche and an ideal reader is important. This isn’t just to put everyone in neat little boxes, but because it actually does increase your readership if you can market in one area, be shared in certain groups, make a name for yourself in a specific circle, etc.
So, for me to create a blog with two overwhelmingly different niches, seems crazy. Especially if I want to create something big. However, it makes perfect sense to me. Here’s why: my daughter’s premature birth is exactly what pushed me into a life of mindset focus and faith in the universe.
I 100% believe that my and my husband’s decision from the start, to take the process one step at a time, was crucial to surviving this time period. Not only that, but I believe that my natural response of following my intuition, trusting in the universe and trusting in science, is why my daughter is doing as well as she is today.
Previous to this experience, I had already done a bit of mindset work. I had read a couple of personal development books, tried to listen to my intuition when I heard it and had a few affirmations that I would occasionally say to myself. I had read “The Secret”, I believed it but didn’t regularly practice it. I was on rung one, or maybe two, of the mindset ladder.
It’s when all control is taken out of your hands that you can really see the power of the universe.
It is not always the big things, so it’s not obvious unless you are looking, but it’s there. When I say “power of the universe” I don’t mean it’s always good. The universe is not a being. It doesn’t feel. It’s not going around saying “I will make everything good for everyone today”. The universe is literally vibrations, picking up on the vibrations you are putting out and adjusting other things to meet your vibrations.
So, if you are constantly thinking “this is the worst”, “why does everything bad happen to me”, “everything is going to turn out badly”. The universe picks up on your negative vibrations, and delivers other things with negative vibrations to you. It’s the whole “like attracts like” thing. Now you keep getting negative things in your life and you are continuously wondering why it’s always the bad stuff. Start looking for the good stuff, and more good stuff will appear. (This is clearly the most scientific way to explain this.) Side note, a way to do this is to start practicing gratitude.
Back to my daughter, my husband and I resolved to take everything step by step. We worked really hard on staying positive, and not thinking about all of the “what-ifs”. I can’t say we were always successful. We sure had some hard times, there were a lot of ups and downs, but we brought ourselves and each other back every time.
Some of the key things we did:
- Embraced the ups and understood the downs. If we had a good day with positive news, we reveled in it. No, I don’t mean we got our hopes up that everything was fine forever and we were going home, but we did enjoy the news and celebrate the good day. If we had a bad day with not good news, we listened, understood, and reminded ourselves that this is just today and tomorrow is a new day. Things change quickly in these situations. Bad news was something we let fall off of us with a “tomorrow is a new day” and good news we took in and allowed ourselves to excited about.
- We stayed positive to everyone. Even on the bad days, we put a smile on for not only our child at home, but the world. If something serious came up, we shared it, but always with as much of a positive spin as possible. This was not because we were trying to keep people out or avoid the situation, but because focusing on the negative doesn’t help anyone.
- We always made sure to be positive around Alice. I read to her every day with positivity in my voice no matter what was going on. If I had to sit quietly to compose myself first, I did, then we escaped into the magical world of Harry Potter together.
We did not, however, put blinders on and pretend everything was going to be perfect.
We didnt even set up her room until she came home from the hospital. There was no planning for the unknowable future, but we did make every decision focused on the outcome we wanted. The universe “heard us” and worked to give us the outcome we saw.
In the end, I came out the other side of this journey knowing that our positive mindsets, refusal to let the negative vibrations run our lives and our determination, along with science, is what brought us to where we are now. Through every negative diagnosis we made sure Alice got the help that was available, but always treated her as if everything was normal and fine. We now have an almost 2 year old, who is hitting most milestones and progressing towards reaching the rest, even though they didn’t know how long she would survive.
This is what solidified my faith in the universe. And it’s exactly why I highlight our premature birth and NICU journeys on this blog along with the focus on mindset.
