I have been seeing a lot of negative things about leggings, specifically printed leggings, floating around the internet lately.
Mostly I just ignore it. Everyone is entitled to their opinions and if you don’t like leggings, well, I’m sorry for your legs, but it doesn’t really concern me. I’m not a big fan of the articles going on and on shaming people for their clothing choices, but again- I have a business I’m starting to build and it’s not productive to spend my day arguing in the comments of an article on Facebook. (It is, however, productive to get lost lurking in a meme-war or searching and saving dozens of recipes I’ll never make… but that’s neither here nor there)
Well, the other day I was required to stay out of town a day longer than expected. I have an “emergency” bag in my car for this reason, as it sometimes needs to happen. Well, in my emergency bag, I had jeans for pants. Because when I was putting together my emergency bag, I didn’t want to spare a pair of leggings. What if I had an outfit put together that would look perfect with the pair I stored in the car? My head is a bit all over the place, and I would never remember they were in there. So my fall foliage Amelia dress would have no mustard colored leggings to go with it, and my whole outfit would be ruined.
Clearly you see why jeans were the only answer.
So I wore those jeans the other day… and it was terrible. I haven’t worn jeans in probably 5 months. Not because I wear leggings everyday (although more often in the winter) but because I wear leggings and dresses and skirts everyday. They are just more comfortable to me. Years ago I would’ve bitten my tongue saying these words, but it’s true- dresses and skirts over jeans for me. Thanks.
I really have nothing against jeans for other people. Mostly because I know what works for me doesn’t work for everyone. And honestly, I just don’t care what you wear. I want you to be comfortable and feel good about yourself and if jeans is what does it for you- wear the jeans! But for the sake of argument, and because I would like to stick up for my dear leggings- here is a list of why leggings are better than jeans.
Leggings look more put together.
Now, I know that this is usually an argument the other way. To me, leggings look more put together than jeans. I have to pay way more attention to the outfit I am throwing on if I am wearing leggings. Just like you don’t want to see my butt hanging out- I don’t want to show it to you. Some women can do that- I can’t. I know it. I am not comfortable like that and I sure don’t feel confident, so I spend a good amount of time making sure my outfit looks nice.
Whereas with jeans, you can throw on whatever and be done. Which can sometimes be a good thing, and an outfit looks nice and put together, but not always.Jeans can be very sloppy. Even the nicest of jeans can look terrible if starting to fade and wear in the wrong places, or if paired with a terrible shirt, or if your butt is hanging out… which leads me to my next point….
Leggings stay up better for me.
I have thighs and hips and a butt that are larger than my waist. I am what you call “hourglass” figured. While people may say this is the “classic beauty” figure, designers hate us and have not created a pair of jeans that don’t slide down to show my crack every time I sit. Belts don’t help. Unless I pull the belt so tight that the whole waist of the jeans bunch and I look ridiculous. They just haven’t found a way to make jeans that are large enough to go over my thighs, hips and butt, but small enough to fit around my waist so they don’t show crack. Unless I wear jeans that are closer to jeggings, and then why not wear leggings? They are more comfortable.
I can get a pair of jeans that is specially designed for my body type- they do that now on the internet- and that’s AWESOME, except I am not paying hundreds of dollars for a pair of jeans. I don’t pay $75 for a pair of jeans. You can find me shopping at target when their jeans are on sale and spending no more than $25 on a pair of jeans. I don’t care how long they say they last, all jeans start to wear in the butt, and in my case the thighs. Which brings me to my next point….
Leggings are cheaper than jeans
AND I have leggings that have lasted as long as some of my jeans and still look nice. Even the priciest leggings are cheaper than most jeans.
I can wear leggings as tights
I can wear leggings as pants by themselves or as tights under a skirt or dress. It’s a 2-for-1 which is the best, and so every time I put them on, I win.
Patterned leggings exist.
Ok, I know this is usually an argument “against” in the “I hate leggings” articles, but I love it. And yes, sometimes I even mix and match prints. Have you ever seen a floral print mixed with black and white stripes? Because I’m obsessed with that this spring, and so I’m on the look out for skirts, dresses, leggings, cardigans, kimonos- really, anything- with either stripes or pretty florals. When I get them I will mix and match and it will be glorious.
I also own paw print leggings that I wear when I want to tell everyone I see that I love animals.
I own cartoon frog leggings that I wear when I want some extra luck. Because, when I had to be on bed rest in the hospital for a month, I gave my son a stuffed frog as a ‘mommy frog’ with arms open to give hugs. Just a few days later I came across frog leggings and so, mine.
Can we just be completely honest here? THEY ARE FUN! And they are a great way to show your personality and be yourself. Why WOULDN’T you want that in this one go-around that we have in this world?
And of course, last point….. Leggings are more comfortable.
So, if you want to wear jeans- please do. I will not judge. But leave me to my leggings.
